Perhaps you have clicked onto this page because nothing is making sense and you are struggling to find meaning and understand your own mind. The daily grind might lead to feelings of helplessness and despair. In the therapeutic alliance we would work together to explore this disconnect and perhaps link it to what has gone on before. We would examine any defences and find what role they play in your life. Are they useful or do they stop you from reaching your full potential? How you find yourself in the present is an accumulation of what has gone on before for you both consciously and unconsciously. The aim of therapy is to untangle this web and take ownership of your life authentically and with self agency.
As well as a private practice I work part time for the NHS.
MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Certificate and Diploma in clinical Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Graduate Diploma Psychology.
I help clients gain an understanding of themselves by exploring the unknown parts of themselves and discovering their true self and what really matters to them.
I do this by encouraging the development of a strong therapeutic relationship which is central to the therapeutic process. The aim here is for the client to feel that this is a holding and safe environment (couch or no couch) where he/she is not judged and feels safe, supported and understood.
The holding environment is also a dynamic and creative space where the client is free to explore his/her feelings without fear of judgement. The client is free to express any emotion – be it anger or sadness and to allow for the full expression of his/her true self.
I encourage an exploration of all life experiences particularly the relationship with the early primary caregiver and how this may have shaped the client’s sense of self and how this might be linked to present day relationships
I would also encourage the expression of thoughts and feeling that might be difficult to verbalize and allow for a play with words going from one thing to another acting as a metaphor for real life situations and dynamics. This is a space where the client is free to experiment with different responses and behaviours.
I work to explore the client’s true self: the times when the client has felt that he/she was being most true to himself/herself and what this felt like. And then we would also explore the false self or the persona that is adopted to meet the expectations of others. The client is free to explore the differences between these selves and perhaps work toward expressing the true self more often.
Finally, we would also zone in on the things that really matter most to the client: to ask the age-old question of: if the client only had a limited amount of time, what would the client want to do? What were the wishes of childhood in the state of dependency and how have they been fulfilled in adulthood? What has been left unfinished? What is the central issue? And how can the client finally discover his/her own uniqueness?
